Migrating from 8.3 to 9.2

Hello ,

I found some literature in the install guide that explains the 4 options of migrating to DOORS 9.2

I have to copy the DOORS data from the current 8.3 server running on a Win 2003 server machine to a new server running W2008 R2 64bit. In order to copy the data, I assume it is necessary to stop the 8.3 server, transfer the data to to the new machine as specified in Option 1 page 29 of DOORS install guide 9.2.

Has anyone had experience in doing this? Any "gotchas" or "hiccups" that I should be aware of along the way?

Any hints or advice  is welcome.

regards

Colm

Hi Colm,

It's pretty straight forward. Just make sure to stop the 8.3 database server on the old machine first before you copy over the data. And also, you will need to know the 'Administrator' account password to complete the migration the first time you start a DOORS client pointing the 9.x server.

But why move to 9.2, why not the latest version 9.5.2?

Hi Kourosh,

For reasons of license compatability I cant upgrade further than 9.2 for the moment.

OK, so from what I understand, the copying the server data from the directories on old 8.3 has to be done with OS commands and not with DOORS commands, correct? In our case it will be a case of copying  data residing on a Win 2003 Server to a machine which is a Win 2008 64bitR2 server.

Correct, there are no DOORS commands for moving the server data from the old server to the new server. You would copy paste the data from one machine to the next in whatever fashion you wish (shared drive, external hard drive, etc etc).

Hi.

Besides the time it takes to copy the data folder from the old installation to the new, finding the Administrator password is usually the thing that takes the longes time in this upgrade...

Three things to consider though when doing this upgrade, I've copied them from the readme files for 9.1 and 9.2:

DOORS ver 9.1:

•Regular expression engine
The regular expression engine has changed. Steps have been taken to ensure DXL compatibility but there may be differences in DXL execution between Telelogic DOORS 8.3 and 9.0 and Telelogic DOORS 9.1.

So, if you use regular expressions, you should check to see if you get the same results in your 8.3 version and in the 9.2.

•DXL Encryption
DXL encryption has been changed and as a result DXL which has been encrypted and is being used in previous versions will not work with Telelogic DOORS 9.1.

So, if you are using encrypted scripts, or including encrypted scripts, these will NOT work anymore, but have to be re-encrypted. (for example WEXP will not work...) If I'm not mistaken, when installing the client on a machine which has 8.3 on it the scripts contained in ...\lib\dxl\addins will not automatically be copied to the new installation, but has to be done manually.

DOORS ver 9.2:

•Licensing
IBM announces that the license policy for Rational DOORS has changed. Each instance of Rational DOORS running on a single machine will now consume its own Rational DOORS license.

This was in later versions changed back to working the same way as before, but in practice it means that if you start up two different DOORS sessions on the same machine you will consume two licenses.
